ESG/Ethical Impact

At Fidelity, we believe we have an obligation and a responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of our business, while also working to enhance the resiliency of the communities where we live and work. This report summarizes the progress we are making to generate cleaner energy, reduce our waste, and develop sustainable solutions with our suppliers. Our associates are instrumental in driving innovation across all of these priorities, leveraging what we call our “Investor Mindset”—using data and factual analysis to inform our decisions, enabled by collaboration and best practice sharing that challenges us to keep improving. We are focused on reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our corporate footprint. We also continue to invest in on-site clean energy, resource conservation and data center consolidation. In doing so, we have reduced our overall carbon dioxide emissions and equivalents by 76% compared to our baseline year of 2007. Before the pandemic, Fidelity’s measured scope 3 emissions consisted of paper, business travel, and associate commuting. As a result of remote and hybrid working, emissions attributable to these sources of Fidelity’s scope 3 emissions were meaningfully reduced. To better understand the impact of remote working on energy use and carbon emissions, we used a published methodology* to estimate incremental scope 1 and 2 emissions attributable to associates working from home. Based on this methodology, those emissions are estimated to be 29,505 MTCO2e for 2021. This quantity proved to be roughly equivalent to measured reductions in Fidelity’s scope 1 and 2 emissions relative to 2019, the last full year before remote working became predominant.
