The Wilson Farms cornucopia has runneth over for many a year now. Back when the farm began growing fresh vegetables in 1884, James Wilson and his brother-in-law George Reynolds carted their harvest to Boston. Now Bostonians and shoppers from all over come to the Lexington, Massachusetts store, a couple farm stands, 33 acres of farmland, and 37,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse, to enjoy the bounty of the company’s vegetables, cut flowers, bakery, cheeses, deli items, meats, and fresh eggs. In addition to its on-site sales, Wilson wholesales its harvest. Four generations later, the Wilson family still runs the operation, which includes the original farm in Lexington and a 500-acre farm in Litchfield, New Hampshire.

Our mission is to grow quality crops and livestock in a sustainable manner utilizing the best stewardship we can provide. We also want to provide our children with the education and skills they will need to grow with agriculture while staying true to our core values. Wilson Grain and Livestock currently plants a combination of soybeans, corn, wheat and alfalfa. We raise a 60 cow-calf herd of Angus cattle. We use 24-row equipment and strive to utilize all available technology in order to remain efficient while taking the time to pay attention to the small details which make a difference to our land and livestock. Soil fertility maps, yield maps and drainage maps are used to determine fertilization rates and timing of applications. A personal agronomist is also consulted when discussing the newest available herbicides and crop fertility recommendations. We use minimum tillage. All ground is deep ripped first with zero to a light working of the ground before planting. There is little or no cultivation of the crop after emergence. Track equipment is utilized during planting and harvest to lessen compaction of the soil. The only work done post-emergence and pre-harvest is the careful and critical application of nitrogen, herbicides and fungicides. All grain is dried and stored at local elevators.
