ESG/Ethical Impact

Our Best for All® strategy provides our customers with profitable steel solutions while creating a more sustainable future for all stakeholders — our customers, investors, employees and communities where we work and live, In April 2021, we announced an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Today, we continue to strive towards this goal by working to achieve a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 2030. U.S. Steel strives to minimize our environmental footprint by implementing greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and air-quality goals while meeting other environmental standards. We engage with our stakeholders throughout the year and report on our performance to relevant groups across our organization. We are committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse team of creative, and highly skilled people who believe in accountability, fairness, and respect. Our Best for All® strategy prioritizes supporting our people and nurturing their development to foster a motivated workforce that can enable us to be the sustainable steel solutions provider our customers need. We are also passionate about strengthening the communities where we live and work, which is why we encourage our employees to volunteer their time and provide corporate contributions in various ways. From partnering and awarding scholarships to advancing STEM education, our volunteering and philanthropic efforts create opportunities to deliver on our Best for All® strategy. Since our founding in 1901, we have upheld our unwavering commitment to doing business ethically, with integrity, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The S.T.E.E.L. Principles, also known as the Gary Principles, set in place by our co-founder and first chairman Judge Elbert Gary, are widely considered to be the first-ever corporate code of ethics and remain central to our business model to this very day.
