When it comes to grocery chains, Trader Joe’s isn’t your average Joe. The company has 500+ stores in 42 states and over 40,000 employees dubbed “Crew Members”. The Crew Members are hard-working, fun people—people with a passion for food, learning, and creating an outstanding experience for their customers. There are more than 3000 unique and everyday items in their private label, all at honest everyday low prices. Packaging innovative, hard-to-find, great-tasting foods under the “Trader Joe’s” name allows the company to cut costs and pass along the savings to their customers. And that’s important, because “Value” is a concept Trader Joe’s takes very seriously. Mission: The company’s philosophy is to bring their customers the best food and beverage values; provide them with information to help make informed buying decisions and to create stores filled with fun, friendliness and genuine care for customers.

Striving to improve on everything we do, every day, is intrinsic to our DNA at Trader Joe’s. This desire to do better can be seen not only in our products and our people, but also behind the scenes, in the important work surrounding sustainability. This year, even amidst the challenges presented by global supply chain interruptions, we continued to make improvements in our packaging and resource management. We are largely a private label company, focused on conducting business through our retail stores—and that focus permits us to be efficient and effective in our sustainability-related endeavors. We have 540 stores in 42 states plus the District of Columbia. Our stores are relatively small (about 12.5 thousand square feet) and true “neighborhood” stores. This smaller-store profile is significantly positive related to sustainability: the smaller physical store size and limited hours of operation mean our energy use is considerably lower than larger, 24-hour stores. 99.5% of the Crew works in our stores. The office Crew supporting stores is very small (deliberately, by design = 0.5%) and works from two, small locations. We offer a limited number of products, approximately 3,400, and 23% of the products in our stores are organic. Our customers tell us they value such products, and we continue to increase our offerings of these items as demand grows. By their nature, such items are produced in more sustainable ways. Many years ago, we decided to exclude any use of Genetically Modified Organisms (“GMO”) as ingredients in our products. Similarly, since our inception we have not permitted any synthetic colors or artificial flavors. A continuing focus of our sustainability initiatives is maintaining product integrity and preventing food waste. We remain committed to balancing the role packaging plays with the realistic opportunities for recycling materials and what is the “best choice” for sustainability. Related to this, we direct and manage the packaging for our private label products. We are proud of the work done this year and acknowledge the need for ongoing attention in this area.
