Guayakí Yerba Mate got its start in 1996 on the Cal Poly University campus when Argentinian Alex Pryor first introduced yerba mate to Californian David Karr. Fast friends and ultimately ‘soul brothers,’ the pair quickly realized there was a need for a nourishing source of energy and, with a healthy dose of optimism, set out to share yerba mate with the world. An Idea Takes Shape Before long, the friends were joined by three other pioneering partners: Don Miguel, Steven Karr and Chris Mann. From two with a vision to five friends on a mission, these ‘Semillas’ (seeds) channeled their activist mentality to pioneer a revolutionary Market Driven Regeneration™ business model that empowers customers to drive tangible change. The Semillas landed in San Luis Obispo, where a coastline full of good surf breaks and epic bike trails provided the backdrop for plenty of long gourd sessions. With a true commitment to the culture of yerba mate, the Semillas established holistic living and business practices that aligned with their love for nature and adventure.
