For Bill Stoller, purchasing the family property brought his connection to our estate full circle. Working the family farm in his youth and serving as a partner at our sister winery, Chehalem, Bill understood that our sloped, rocky terrain with low-yielding soil, would be ideally suited for a world-class vineyard. Bill’s father and uncle purchased our farm in 1943 to raise turkeys. Over the next five decades, they grew the farm from a small family operation into one of Oregon’s largest with nearly 700,000 free-range turkeys at its peak. When the family farm ceased its operations in 1993, Bill seized the opportunity to acquire it with the vision of cultivating an enduring legacy for our land and Oregon wine industry.

ESG/Ethical Impact

Stoller is committed to leadership in premium winemaking and sustainable environmental practices. LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) efforts include planting cover crops and wild flowers to encourage a healthy population of beneficial insects, maintaining natural areas for wild life, and forgoing many chemical sprays. Our LIVE winery certification focuses on energy efficiency, safety, and wastewater treatment. Catacombs throughout our Reserve Winery draw in nighttime air, acting as a natural cooling system. Our vineyard became LIVE certified in 2006 and the winery in 2009. Our Reserve Winery and Tasting Room were constructed from materials with a high percentage of recycled content to conserve natural resources. Beams and columns at the porches and the stair treads are from recycled wood reclaimed from a building in Northwest Portland. Regional materials and local fabricators were employed as much as possible to reduce transportation impacts and support our local economy. 96% of construction waste was recycled, diverting resources from the landfill. We were the first Northwest winery to produce solar energy. Located on south-facing roofs, our solar arrays generate enough power to make the property energy neutral. We also employ natural ventilation and lighting, efficient heating and cooling systems, and an efficient building envelope. Computerized lighting control system employs switches, motion sensors, and timers for efficient energy use. Our estate is home to one of the largest private oak savannas in the Pacific Northwest as part of our dedication to preserving ecology restoration areas for indigenous plant and wildlife. Fallen oaks are re-purposed for bird boxes to encourage natural predation.
