Safeway is dedicated to preserving the planet through environmentally responsible day-to-day business. We are dedicated to preserving the planet by seeking greener ways to conduct our day-to-day business. At Safeway, sustainability means keeping the wellbeing of our company, customers and community at the forefront, without compromising the ability for future generations to prosper on the planet we share. We have reduced our carbon footprint by limiting greenhouse gas emissions, when possible retrofitting stores with LEED® standards energy-efficient lighting and heating systems and are making great strides in diverting waste and reducing packaging. We are also leading the way in a broad range of sustainable fronts, including sustainability, animal welfare and local sourcing. Safeway believes in reducing our carbon footprint to help address climate change. Safeway’s reusable bags are an easy way to make a lasting impact on the environment, and we encourage shoppers to use our broad selection of reusable bags and totes for a diverse range of shopping needs. We are well on our way to reaching the 2010 industry goal of lowering plastic bag use by 50% over our five years. Customers are encouraged to use the plastic bag recycling depots located at the entrance of all Safeway stores to dispose of unwanted plastic bags. These bags are then sent to Trex Company where they’re given a new longer term use as plastic decking, fencing, railing and furniture. At Safeway, we’re doing OurPart™ to ensure seafood remains available for today’s customers and the customers of tomorrow. But that’s not enough; we’re striving towards offering seafood that is harvested and produced through sustainable means. We understand that protecting the long-term health of our ocean ecosystems is essential. It ensures the continued viability of the species we source. And it supports the communities we source from, many of which are in Canada. Safeway takes pride in its role as a steward of our natural resources. That’s why we’re committed to developing an unrivaled reputation of growth. Growth towards environmentally, socially, and ethically responsible business practices. It’s in the spirit of this commitment that we’ve partnered with the Ocean Wise Seafood program. A Canada-wide program for sustainable seafood.
