The Portman Estate commissioned Bioregional, to integrate a holistic approach to sustainability into the Estate’s workplace, culture, and the wider Estate functions. The approach to this task included the following elements: 1. Gap analysis of The Estate’s policies, strategies and practices to establish where sustainability is being addressed across the Estate. Strengths and weaknesses have been identified based on Bioregional’s expertise in corporate sustainability and the built environment, together with a competitor analysis and stakeholder input. This included: • Employee sustainability survey to gauge employees’ knowledge of sustainability, engagement with existing strategies and enthusiasm to learn more. • Interviews with employees of The Portman Estate, representing various business functions. • External stakeholder interviews with a range of businesses in the local area. • Competitor analysis of the Estate’s peer group, including both businesses and other landed estates, looking in particular at sustainability policies for employees and strategic project targets. • B Corp assessment review, cross-referenced against evidence received. • One Planet Living Questionnaire for the Sustainability Committee to complete, asking specific questions on qualitative and quantitative data for each of the One Planet Principles where information was not available in the B Corp assessment. 2. Carbon footprint – calculation of the London Estate’s carbon footprint for 2019/20 was undertaken during 2020. The scope included all units where the Estate has operational control, as well as residential and commercial leased assets where the Estate does not have operational control. The findings provide a baseline for measuring future carbon emissions. In calculating the Estate’s footprint we used the operational control approach using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol guidelines which is in line with the UK Government’s guidance. 3. Create the One Planet Action Plan – this document will be published on our website. Progress against the goals and actions will be monitored by Bioregional.
