Advances in technology and the movement of so many daily activities online have had consequences beyond fraud and security vulnerabilities. As the use of social media has grown, more and more people report feeling lonely and isolated, and mental health issues, particularly among young people, have increased significantly. Political polarization and extremism are on the rise, and the civility of public discourse has declined. At the same time, our planet is warming rapidly due to the burning of fossil fuels, and our window of opportunity to avoid the most drastic consequences of climate change is closing quickly.
