Nucor continues to electrify the steel industry with a simple concept: The minimill is mighty. At its various minimills, Nucor produces about 15 million tons of steel annually, including hot- and cold-rolled steel, steel joists, and metal buildings. North America’s largest recycler of scrap metal, Nucor produces steel by melting scrap in electric arc furnaces. Most of its products are sold to steel service centers, manufacturers, and fabricators. Subsidiaries such as Vulcraft — one of the US’s largest producers of steel joists, girders, and decking — use the balance of the steel. The company has grown mainly through acquisition since 2006, including spending $1 billion to buy The David J. Joseph Company. Mission: Our challenge is to become the world’s safest steel company. We live each day with gratitude for the families, customers and partners that make our work possible.

Nucor proudly uses recycled scrap to make high-quality steel with low emissions. Using one of the cleanest and most energy efficient steel-making processes available. We’re proud to be a part of a circular economy, minimizing waste and energy use and reusing all materials so that almost nothing is discarded. The steel in a Model T may have been recycled into rebar, which was recycled into a train, which eventually became a windmill. The cycle lives on. Steel can be infinitely recycled and reused without any quality loss. Nucor steel products are made from an average of 77.3% recycled content, with some products containing almost 100% recycled content. We also recycle more than 90% of the dust from our electric arc furnaces (EAF). For more than 50 years Nucor has pioneered circular, electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking that recycles scrap into new steel. Nucor’s circular steel mill GHG intensity is 1/3 the global average of extractive, blast furnace steelmakers. We are committed to renewable energy. Nucor has invested in multiple power purchase agreements to lower our carbon footprint. We are committed to being good stewards across North America. These stories show what’s possible as we strive to find new and innovative ways to continue to decrease our carbon footprint.
