The MetroHealth System, Cuyahoga County’s public health system, is honoring its commitment to create a healthier community by building a new hospital on its main campus in Cleveland. The building and the 25 acres of green space around it are catalyzing the revitalization of MetroHealth’s West Side neighborhood. MetroHealth broke ground on its new hospital in 2019. The project is being financed with nearly $1 billion the system borrowed on its own credit after dramatically improving its finances. In the past five years, MetroHealth’s operating revenue has increased by 40% and its number of employees by 21%. Today, its staff of 8,000 provides care at MetroHealth’s four hospitals, four emergency departments and more than 20 health centers and 40 additional sites throughout Cuyahoga County. In the past year, MetroHealth has served 300,000 patients at more than 1.4 million visits in its hospitals and health centers, 75% of whom are uninsured or covered by Medicare or Medicaid. The health system is home to Cuyahoga County’s most experienced Level I Adult Trauma Center, verified since 1992, and Ohio’s only adult and pediatric trauma and burn center.

Health Care Services & HospitalsESG/Ethical Impact
Our award-winning sustainability program advances health and wellness and builds resilience in our health system through the protection and thoughtful use of shared resources, reduction of carbon emissions and through engaging employees and leaders at all levels to set and reach our sustainable goals. This is particularly important given that health care institutions create about 10 percent of all carbon emissions nationally. Furthermore, we are committed to expanding sustainability beyond our walls by improving community health and prosperity, with a devotion to equity, resilience and climate protection. MetroHealth has adopted a collaborative, system-level and community-focused approach to sustainability. This commitment is best exemplified by our effort to form the Clark-Fulton/MetroHealth EcoDistrict, the first health care-anchored certified EcoDistrict in the nation. EcoDistricts is a national collective impact model for creating comprehensive, measurable change at the neighborhood level Moving forward, we are focused on achieving compliance at the highest possible level with the recently published standard from The Joint Commission regarding emissions and waste reduction. We are also engaging peers including the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and Practice Greenhealth to augment our efforts and further implement best practices. Our ultimate goal is to create more holistic, community-centric health care that strengthens our local communities by making them healthier and more prosperous. This is the central purpose of our sustainability strategy as well as the primary focus of all activities at MetroHealth.
