The Living Building Challenge is the most rigorous sustainable building certification attainable and is administered by the International Living Future Institute. Hathaway Dinwiddie built the new Santa Monica City Services building under this framework, and today it is the greenest municipal building in the world. The project went beyond LEED, requiring beginning-to-end operational compliance with strict, regenerative triple net-zero standards. One of the many ways the City Services Building is unique is how it does not import or export any water, energy, or waste–thus making it a “Living Building”.
