Half Price Books tries to live up to its name and its hippie roots. The bookstore chain sells used and new books, magazines, videos, DVDs, and music. Only about half of the merchandise it sells is new. Its roughly 110 stores are located in more than 15 states, primarily Texas. Its wholesale catalog division, Texas Bookman, reprints classics and other public domain works. Half Price Books has grown slowly but steadily; its stores keep a small-company look with secondhand and employee-made furnishings. The company was started by Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson (late mom of president and CEO Sharon Anderson Wright) in 1972 to save trees by recycling unwanted books. The Anderson family owns most of the company.

Be fair to customers and our employees, promote literacy, be kind to the environment and remain financially viable so we may continue. Teachers save 10% at HPB! Half Price Books welcomes educators, schoolteachers, and librarians* to apply for a renewable Educator Discount Card to save 10% on all in-store purchases year-round. Half Price Books supports efforts to combat illiteracy by partnering with local literacy nonprofits nationwide. Not only do we provide coinboxes at registers in our retail locations which allow customers to donate to literacy nonprofits in their area, but we highlight local nonprofits from each of our stores’ regions every September to garner additional support for them during National Literacy Month. Half Price Books follow the sustainability mantra “Books should fill our lives, not our land.” and has remained dedicated to establishing eco-friendly practices at every level of operation since 1972.
