Greg Flynn founded Flynn Restaurant Group (FRG) in 1998 as the owner and operator of eight Applebee’s in Washington State. Over the next 16 years, Greg strategically charted the course of the business to develop and acquire more than 750 restaurants that together represent $1.7 billion in sales. While the initial focus was on growing within the Applebee’s system, the company branched out into other brands first adding Taco Bell in 2013 followed by Panera in 2015 where it was first new franchise admitted into the system in over 10 years. Today, through its three wholly-owned subsidiaries, Apple American Group, Bell American, and Pan American, the company owns and operates over 480 Applebee’s, 200 Taco Bells, and 50 Paneras directly employing 40,000 people in 28 states. Combined this makes FRG the largest restaurant franchise brand, and one of the 50 largest foodservice companies in the United States.

ESG/Ethical Impact

As we continue to grow and expand, our vision remains unchanged: we strive to be the premier franchise group in the restaurant industry. Our structure is designed to hire and retain great people, empower them to run consistently superior operations, and achieve sustained growth in the strongest concepts. We own restaurants in Portland, Maine, and Portland, Oregon. These restaurants are more than 3,000 miles apart and require a different approach to reach their full potential. That’s why we give our managers the freedom to run their restaurant as if they owned it. We have “federal” standards and rules that we apply everywhere, but we believe the best results come from giving local operators the opportunity to determine what’s right for their business. At Flynn, we believe in “zero tolerance,” which for us relates to the physical condition of our restaurants. We strive for our units to remain as close to “perfect” in their appearance as possible because we believe it is a critical component of the guest experience and a key factor in retaining the best talent. To that end, we continue to reinvest in our restaurants to meet these high standards. The community we serve reaches every corner of the country; it includes our team members, their families, our guests, and countless neighborhoods. As an organization, we’re committed to giving back and believe one of our most important roles is to support the community. We do this through the Flynn Family Fund, our ongoing support of numerous local charities, and our involvement in national programs including Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Make a Wish and the Special Olympics. At Flynn Restaurant Group, we’re passionate about giving back. That means we believe in taking care of our own and in supporting the neighborhoods we serve. Taking care of our own is at the heart of our team and core to our culture. That is why in 2015, we started the Family Fund to support our team members and their families when they are faced with unexpected challenges. The Fund is entirely employee funded, with more than 65% of our team members participating. These funds are used in a variety of situations including medical bills, financial struggles, and recently in North Carolina where several team members’ homes were flooded or destroyed during Hurricane Matthew.
