Electric Power Research Institute

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) knows there’s more to electricity than putting a plug in a socket. The institute consists of investor-owned and government-owned utility companies, as well as other industry representatives. EPRI is a not-for-profit research consortium that organizes and funds collaborative research. The organization identifies and works on issues related to electricity generation, delivery, and use, including questions related to environmental protection. EPRI maintains offices in Madrid and Tokyo, as well as in about a half a dozen locations in the US. More than 10% of the organization’s members are located outside the US. EPRI was founded in 1973.

ESG/Ethical Impact

For nearly a half a century, EPRI has been conducting research to better understand energy impacts and advance technologies benefiting customers, communities, and the environment. Through collaborative analysis, environmental science, and technology evaluation, our expert research team develops tools and resources helping the global power sector solve today’s and tomorrow’s environmental and sustainability challenges. By leading collaborative and comprehensive R&D essential to the clean energy economy, EPRI is helping create a healthier planet for all. Improving sustainability performance has become an important indicator of corporate success, stewardship, and responsibility. Many companies publish annual sustainability and corporate responsibility reports to communicate their policies, goals, and ongoing performance on key sustainability issues. Notably, the sustainability priorities communicated through these reports vary considerably across the electric power industry. This study summarizes how the industry portrays its sustainability priorities through corporate reporting by investigating a sample of 25 electric companies, chosen based on their performance in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and their participation in the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI’s) Energy Sustainability Interest Group.
