It’s not one of the Big Four, but it is big. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) is essentially the payroll and accounting department for the Department of Defense. Annually, the DFAS pays nearly 6 million military and civilian personnel, retirees, and annuitants; processes some 14 million contractor invoices; and makes more than 7 million travel payments, disbursing about $590 billion, total. Additionally, it manages some $394 billion in military retirement trust funds. DFAS is financed by its customers rather than through direct appropriations. It operates through 26 locations worldwide. Theresa McKay was named DFAS Director in 2008.

ESG/Ethical Impact

DFAS, as a large government agency, can significantly impact the environment through its operations. This includes resource consumption, energy usage, and waste generation. DFAS has the potential to influence energy efficiency through its office buildings, data centers, and transportation logistics, which can either contribute to energy conservation or increased consumption. DFAS relies on various suppliers and contractors for its services. Ensuring ethical and sustainable practices within its supply chain can promote positive social and governance impacts. Employee well-being, including mental health support, work-life balance, and healthcare benefits, can impact both social and governance aspects of ESG. DFAS’s financial operations have a direct influence on governance. Ensuring transparency, accuracy, and compliance with financial regulations is crucial. Upholding ethical governance practices, such as anti-corruption measures and transparency in financial transactions, is essential for building trust and credibility. Engaging with various stakeholders, including employees, suppliers, and the public, can contribute to better decision-making and alignment with ESG goals.
