Chunghwa Telecom is Taiwan’s #1 telecommunications operator. The formerly state-run carrier has both domestic and international telecom operations, offering local (13 million subscribers) and long-distance phone services, as well as wireless service (nearly 20 million), Internet access (about 4 million), and data transmission. The company, which markets its services under the Chunghwa and HiNet brands, operates from offices and facilities throughout the country. Chunghwa Telecom was created in 1996 when the state spun off its telecommunications directorate as a first step toward privatizing Taiwan’s telecom industry, which is open to foreign competition.
