Known for classic couture like “the little black dress” and famed fragrance Chanel No. 5, Chanel has been a haute name in fashion and cosmetics for decades. The company also creates watches and jewelry and has a single license — for eyewear with Luxottica. Founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her first boutique in 1913, touting designs known for simplicity. Coco died in 1971, and Chanel’s style stagnated for years until Karl Lagerfeld took over the designs and revived the label by tapping a younger market. The company boasts more than 160 boutiques worldwide. Controlled by chairman Alain Wertheimer’s family, Chanel also owns lingerie and swimwear brand Eres and manages ateliers through Paraffection.

ESG/Ethical Impact

Our sustainability ambition is to create lasting positive impact both within and beyond our House. These values guide our approach, and the role we can play in protecting and restoring our climate. We recognise climate change as both a social and environmental issue. We believe we have a responsibility to respond to this challenge by reducing the impact of our business and moving beyond our own footprint to accelerate progress. We have set science-based targets to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and from our value chain. We support the transition to a low carbon future, and the targets set by the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (COP21). By harnessing the power of our creativity and taking a long-term collaborative approach, with our partners, suppliers and peers, we continue to advance solutions toward a more sustainable future. As we continue to grow our digital media presence, our Global Digital Services team works across Chanel’s digital sites to accelerate progress by embedding sustainability from the start. This team of 15 experts, works on the performance, accessibility and sustainability of our digital services.
