CFPUA’s Environmental Management and Sustainability Department (EMSD) oversees numerous programs to ensure CFPUA and its customers are meeting local, state, and federal environmental regulations while also working to incorporate sustainability into daily operations and build a climate-resilient utility. EMSD’s on-site laboratory, certified by the State of North Carolina, provides testing services in support of CFPUA’s Water and Wastewater Treatment Divisions. Staff in the department also manage CFPUA’s wastewater pretreatment program, the drinking water cross-connection control program, a backflow prevention program, a commercial grease interceptor program, and a recycling program. The department also houses sustainability staff dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and working alongside internal colleagues and external partners to improve CFPUA’s ability to operate in the face of severe weather and a changing climate. In an effort to streamline our sustainability research, strategies, and goals, we began to include the greenhouse gas inventory data in the Resiliency Report starting in 2020.
