Belmond Ltd. (formerly Orient-Express Hotels Ltd) is a hospitality and leisure company that operates luxury hotels, train services and river cruises worldwide. In 2015, the company had 35 deluxe hotels, 7 tourist trains, 3 river cruises and restaurants in 22 countries. The company was founded in 1976 by the American entrepreneur James Sherwood with the acquisition of the Hotel Cipriani in Venice from the Guinness family for £900,000. James Sherwood then bought a number of historic rail cars similar to (but likely separate from) those used on the original Orient Express train, which he restored and used to offer rides from Paris and London to his hotel in Venice to wealthy clients, thus the former name of the company. Much of the history of the company is documented in James Sherwood’s memoir Orient Express: A Personal Journey.

ESG/Ethical Impact

As the visionary leader of luxury travel, we believe we have a distinct role in perpetuating the Legendary Art of Travel. At Belmond, our passion is to craft incomparable genuine travel experiences. With that comes a responsibility for safeguarding the beauty that surrounds our properties, as well as the precious local culture that make our guests’ stays so unique. With our pioneering spirit and ambition to shape the future of travel, we focus on enhancing the cultural, natural and human heritage of the destinations where we operate, ensuring it stays relevant and timeless for generations to come. Our “Think Global, Act Local” approach values each property’s first-hand knowledge and recognises the specificities of every context. It allows each local team to develop initiatives and partnerships that have the most relevance to the spaces and the communities that live adjacent to them, maximising in this way their impact and engagement across three pillars: Cultural heritage: Protect and progress heritage, from historically important buildings to arts, crafts and cultural traditions that are vital to the tourism industry and the communities we operate in Natural heritage: Champion the sustainable production of food in our restaurants Protect and restore the natural world Minimise the use of natural resources such as water and energy, and ensuring efficient waste management Human heritage: Learn from and become allies of the the communities present in the destinations in which we operate For setting ambitious sustainability goals as a company, in 2021 we elevated our efforts through a Partnership with EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism. The partnership enables us to robustly monitor our resources, track improvements, and identify any challenges across solid waste management, water and energy consumption use as well as in responsible procurement and social and cultural management. As we look to the future, we continue to explore ways of progressing heritage and elevating our impact across the world. An aerial panorama show the hotel and its gardens are immediately alongside the spectacular cascades of the Iguassu Falls
